Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The feast is a relatively new addition to the liturgical calendar being instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925.
The Feast came at a time when the world was turning its back on Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. It was at a time rife with anti-Catholic sentiment. It was also a time when many dictators were coming to power. Communism, nazism, fascism were all gaining ground in Europe. So the pope felt the need to remind the world that Jesus Christ is the only King. Jesus is the King of the Universe; the Prince of Peace; He is the Way, the Truth, & the Life.
“The feast of Christ the King is therefore not a feast of those who are subjugated, but a feast of those who know that they are in the hands of the one who writes straight on crooked line.” -Pope Benedict XVI
