Today is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. For three consecutive days in December 1531, Our Lady appeared to Saint Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City. Our Lady asked for a church to be built at the hill in her honor. Many people thought Juan Diego was crazy.
On December 12, Our Lady told Juan Diego to pick roses and bring them to the bishop. Juan Diego did as he was asked. He collected the roses and carried them in his tilma.
When he opened his tilma in front of the bishop, it wasn’t the roses that surprised and awed the bishop; it was the miraculous image of Our Lady. Needless to say, the bishop conceded to having a church built on Tepeyac Hill. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is on display for veneration by the faithful to this day at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. May God bless you on this the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
