It seems as if everyday of the year there is a new holiday to be celebrated, everything from National Siblings Day to National Pizza Day. So when my boss mentioned that Wednesday was National Empanada Day, we knew it was our task to find a righteous Latin American restaurant for lunch. And that we did.
We just so happened to be working in Jersey City right off of Central Avenue on the border of Union City in a predominantly Cuban neighborhood. On the corner of Central Avenue & North Street stands Rumba’s Cafe. Rumba’s is serving some very delicious Cuban specialties at really reasonable prices. We entered Rumba’s and were immediately welcomed like long lost cousins.
We took a seat at the counter and perused the menu. We knew we had to have a few empanadas in addition to a sandwich. We ordered two beef empanadas each. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and my boss order a roast pork sandwich. I must say everything was super fresh and the flavors were spot on. I’m a big fan of Cuban sandwiches, and this was definitely one of the best I’ve had. The roast pork was the star of the sandwich. It was sweet and juicy. The empanadas were also great. I love the salty addition of the picadillo to the Cuban style empanadas.
I washed down my lunch with a cortadito, which is a Cuban style coffee. It is steamed milk and espresso. I’m a big coffee fan, and I must say that the cortadito is one of my favorite ways to enjoy coffee.
If you find yourself in Jersey City with a hankering for Cuban home cooking, you should definitely pay a visit to Rumba’s Cafe. You will be fed delicious Cuban cuisine in a relaxed, yet warm and friendly environment. ¡Buen Provecho!
