On Friday, May 1, our Holy Name Society hosted a First Friday Holy Hour, Benediction, & Talk on Marian Consecration with Brother John Maria Devaney, O.P.  Brother John is a Dominican brother with the Province of St. Joseph.  He is based at St. Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church in NYC.  In three weeks time, Brother John will be ordained a priest at St. Dominic’s Church in Washington, D.C.

I became friends with Brother John at last October’s Rosary Pilgrimage we attended at the cloistered Dominican Nuns’ Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary in Summit, NJ.  Brother John’s eloquent & moving homily on Our Lady and the importance of the Holy Rosary really struck a cord with me.

A couple of months ago, I invited Brother John to visit our parish for one of our First Friday Holy Hours.  He accepted my invitation for our May Holy Hour.  Brother John gave us a poignant and engaging talk on Marian Consecration.

The month of May is dedicated to Our Lady.  It’s also a great month to consider,  think about, and discern consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary.  St. Louis Marie de Montfort, who wrote a book on Marian Consecration entitled “True Devotion to Mary”, once said that total consecration to Jesus through Mary is “the surest, easiest, and most perfect means” to becoming a saint.

Before listening to Brother John’s talk I was contemplating attempting a Total Consecration of myself to Jesus through Mary; but after listening to his talk, I am eager on accomplishing a Total Consecration.  I’m not saying life will become “all sunshine and rainbows” to quote Sylvester Stallone in “Rocky Balboa”.  There will still be crosses to bear, but with the Blessed Mother by our side our will and strength will be refreshed and renewed.  Perhaps you, too, will consider consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary.
