The other day, we stumbled upon the Dumont Crystal Diner on West Madison Avenue in Dumont. This place is a total blast from the past. It’s one of those dining car style diners with a few booths along the wall and a counter which separates the dining room from the very open kitchen.Louie is the owner and cook at the Dumont Crystal Diner. One thing we learned very quickly is that Louie is a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. He told us that he’s been to Lambeau Field six times. He’s also been to three Super Bowls, including the Packer win in 1996.
We asked Louie what he recommended. And without hesitation he said to either try the marinated chicken breast or the burger. He said the burgers are hand formed using fresh ground beef. I was sold on a burger. And sure enough Louie pulled out a few balls of beef. He formed the patties and then stuffed them with some sautéed mushrooms and onions. As the burger were cooking on the flattop, Louie made some small talk with us and kabitzed with a few of the locals that were dining at the counter. He sprinkled a little of his secret spice blend on the burgers and slapped a slice of American cheese on each. He then sliced two round rolls in half; and put a slice of tomato and a piece of lettuce on them. After a few more minutes of sizzling beef on the flattop, Louie slid the spatula under the cheeseburgers and with one fell swoop placed them on the rolls and presented the burgers to us.
I must say, I was quite impressed with the cheeseburger. The burger was super juicy and the crusty round roll soaked up the burger juices nicely. I enjoyed every bite of the burger as much as the theatrics of Louie and the cast of characters at the Dumont Crystal Diner. If you find yourself in the area of Dumont, New Jersey, make it a point to stop in at the Dumont Crystal Diner for a blast from the past and a bit of dinner theatre.
