“In Hoc Signo Vinces”: It’s Time to Take Back Our Catholic Manhood!

This post is aimed mainly at the gentlemen out there. Let me start with a couple of questions.  When was the last time you spent an afternoon watching football or any sport for that matter?

Now answer me this. When was the last time you spent an hour or even 10 minutes on your knees in adoration before our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament?

So let me ask you another question. Are you looking for answers to tough questions in your life? Are you struggling with something?

If you want answers to your questions, if you want to overcome your struggles, or if you just want someone to listen to you; then you must bring all of this to Our Lord.

As Jesus said to Saint Thomas the Apostle in the Gospel of Saint John Chapter 14 Verse 6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father expect through me.”

This leads me to the point of my post. Holy Mother Church is divided into three divisions of sorts:

1.) The Church Triumphant – this is the Communion of Saints and all those that are in Heaven.

2.) The Church Penitent or The Church Suffering – this includes all those that are in Purgatory. They have not yet reached the fullness and glory God.

3.) The Church Militant – We, all of the living Faithful, make up this group.

St. Ambrose, by Francisco de Zurbarán

The Church Militant is in a constant battle against sin and the Devil. Yes, gentlemen, there is a Devil. And he will do anything for your soul. I read this great quote by Saint Ambrose of Milan in Dr. Paul Thigpen’s excellent book “Manual for Spiritual Warfare” (page 134):

“The Lord who has taken away your sin and pardoned your faults also protects you and keeps you from the wiles of your adversary the Devil, so that the Enemy, who is accustomed to leading into sin, may not surprise you. Whoever entrusts himself to God does not dread the Devil. ‘If God is for us, who is against us?’ (Rom 8:31).”

No one said this life was meant to be easy. But we have to accept, lift up, and carry our crosses alongside Jesus. As the inimitable Venerable Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen said, “Unless there is a Good Friday in your life, there can be no Easter Sunday.”

So, gentleman, are we willing to be soldiers in the Church Militant? Are we willing to fight tooth and nail even unto death for the salvation of souls, ours and our loved ones?

If you answered in the affirmative, then it’s time to organize a Holy League of sorts. Pope Saint Pius V organized the original Holy League in 1571.

If you get a chance you must read “INTO THE BREACH:  An Apostolic Exhortation to Catholic Men, my Spiritual Sons in the Diocese of Phoenix” by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix.  The full exhortation can be read at Into the Breach.

Also watch the short film “A Call to Battle”, which visualizes Bishop Olmsted’s exhortation.

So gentlemen, make it a point to lead your families to church. Make it a point to go to confession and receive the Eucharist on a regular basis. Make it a point to join a men’s prayer group. Make it a point to join a Catholic Men’s Fraternal Organization, such as the Knights of Columbus or the Holy Name Society.

I know we are all busy with the hustle and bustle of life. But remember, we are fighting for eternal life and the beatific vision for ourselves and our loved ones.

Remember this Latin phrase, “In Hoc Signo Vinces” which means “In this Sign you will conquer”!

May God bless you and your families!
