The Donkey in the King Cake

The Donkey that was inside the Galette des Rois (King Cake)

This little donkey was the fève that was hidden in the Galette des Rois we had on the Feast of the Epiphany the other day.

Traditionally it would have been a little bean (la fève in French) that was hidden in the King Cake, but over time the bean was replaced by little figurines. In some cakes, you may find one of the Three Kings or even the Christ Child.

This is what a Galette des Rois (King Cake) looks like. This one was from Pierre & Michel French Bakery in Elmwood Park, NJ.

Having just a drop of French blood in my veins, this is a tradition we just recently started of enjoying a King Cake on Epiphany and throughout the season leading to Fat Tuesday and Lent. Even though we never practiced this tradition growing up; it’s a tradition that I plan on continuing.
